New Brooche's

I have been exploring, working with different materials, trying to understand how they move and it it suits my visions. I normally work with fabric's and I can see that it suits me but I want to explore fabric's from a different perspective what that is I am not sure as yet. I have started to play with resin by making Brooches to try and learn how to use it as well as understand the best way to apply it to my ideas....................... Loads to learn:-)

William and rain

It's been a long time, far to long.
I have just finished a workshop gig at William Morris Gallery, which I really enjoyed, it did run over time but that's because I was really getting into it and didn't take note of the time.  I was given a lift to the station by a fellow artist who was also working on the event but in another room, we chewed the fat for a short while then I jumped out the car. As I was about to run to the station my stomach started to talk to me and of course I had to heed its voice, so I diverted to a corner shop not thinking whether I had any money luckly I found a pound and purchased a packet of crisps... Mmm very nurtrise but I tell you this it helped. I boarded the tube, found a seat and settled down waiting for my stop, in front of me was a lovely women and her child, all seem well so I thought, how wrong was I. The young child looked sleepy and rested her head on her mother's shoulder. Like a flash she leaned forward and vomited, I managed to move my feet out of the way before the vomit hit the ground. I felt so sorry for the child but also glad that I didn't get hit by the projectile. I hope the both got home safe.  It's the worse thing ever when your child is sick but being out with them and they are sick their is a sense of helpless you feel and I saw that in the mothers eyes. I hope they are both OK.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S MONTH

Sue Hotchkis

Artist Statement

I am an artist with a passion for texture, surface and space. I create unique printed and stitched abstract pieces.
I gain inspiration wherever I travel; this is often found in the insignificant and overlooked. I’m particularly drawn to man-made objects that have been distressed by the passage of time. As in the Japanese aesthetic wabi-sabi, I treasure the imperfections found in the natural changes that occur in such things as weathered walls, rusting metal or peeling paint
I aim to create fragment like pieces that realize these aesthetic qualities, challenging perceptions of beauty in our surroundings. Where rotting wood can become a multifaceted surface of overlapping threads or mould a lacelike intricate print. Crumbling walls are transformed into the tactile and beautiful.
Initially I study the photographs I’ve taken of a specific place or object. Then I work with its qualities, colour, form, texture and composition, creating hand dyed and screen printed images onto fabric. These fabrics are then either left as they are or they may be manipulated, torn, ripped, layered and further worked on with stitch by hand and machine. I work intuitively responding to what develops; pieces are often constructed only to be deconstructed. The pieces evolve over time and the process can take weeks or often months.

Glammammama

-->
(My) International Women’s Month
Glammamamma

My friend, Quilting Mafia, asked me to contribute to International Women’s Month.  International Women’s Day, started on 1st February, but she is carrying it through the whole of the month.

I have been making and creating for many years, and my friend, Quilting Mafia, asked me to contribute to International Women’s Week, which starts this month, but she is carrying it through the whole of the month.

I have been making and creating for many years, and have decided to share my work with all the world’s women.

Last year, Suzanne in a tester group, which met each month to weave, taught me.
All the weavings were based around spirituality, whether you were religious or not, as religion, beliefs were not the focus point.

After some time, we learnt to weave a Doll on a frame using yarns as the warp (left to right) threads, and then the ‘fabric’ was cut from the frame.  The sides were sewn together then the centre was filled with small pebbles, then dried pulses, rice, and died, scented flowers or petals.  I filled my doll with lentils, dried leaves, scented with essential oils and an amber stone at the base.

Her head is made with needle felted, merino wool, with Swarovski glass for eyes.
She is wearing a head wrap, 6made from a webbed yarn, which I used to weave her body.

During each part of making the doll, I thought about how she/I would ‘be’.
Will she be tall, short, even the skin colour  As you can see, she is has a green face.
Moreover, that’s because, it’s the colour of the felted bead, I had in my stash!

Her name is ‘Countess Carmelita’, and she is going out for the day.
She has no physical money, but she uses cowrie shell beads, as currency, which you can see, i have sewn on her back.

The ‘Countess’, is a strong, powerful, woman, who likes her independence and individuality.
She may be western born, but has a proud culture, which is not always obvious by the clothes she wears, but talk to her, and she will wax lyrical about the time she spent in Africa and the Caribbean.

I hope you like her and feel inspired to take part in International Women’s Month

Peace & Love

Work in progress

I have been working on some pieces where i have been using silk as my paper and drawing onto normal paper and photocopying the image onto heat transfer paper - i know lots of paper mentioned:-) i have been working on them for the last 18mths and i still haven’t finished as yet.  The reason for that is I want to keep the work fresh from my point of view - overworking it when the piece is not ready so …. i stop for a while and do something else until it calls me back.  I haven’t finished them as yet……..

let me know what you think of them so far

Online

http://quiltingmafia.bigcartel.com The sun is shining, which is always wonderful to see and feel but yesterday was so cold and unfriendly. What am I going on about, you mustn't live in the past you must live in the present and maybe the  future? I feel that you must acknowledge the past and learn form it to be able to have a better future.  I have never been that great with my online presences but I have found that it is really needed to further my artistic endeavours.  So with that in mind I have opened an online store so that the world can now see some of the things i make.

I hope you are able to come visit me sometime, don't be a stranger now

Tea Cloth or Art Cloth?

I have long had a love for fabric which has caused me to meet so many wonderful people and experience so many brilliant things, I want to apply it to my everyday life and not just my creative life which in the past was not my everyday life if you get what I mean?
Paying the bills that's what is needed to exist on this level at the moment but the way in which I really want to exist on a daily basis is through and with creativity.  What am I getting at?  Well, I have made a firm decision to move forward with my creativity this being at the for front of my daily existence, to beautify my mundane duties such as the drying the dish's after they have been washed up.

I have started to create some Tea Cloths/Towels and Art Cloths

You can have a closer look if you want and you can even purchase one or even some:-)

Digital Portfolio Submission

There are many sides to who I am and I have still to discover who I can be and I look forward to it.  Being able to explore my creativity in an environment that not only discover and nurtures new talents but set standard for other to follow, this is a place that I know that I belong.  I am a mother, an artist, designer and educator and proud to hold all these self appointed titles.
The body has inspired the Collection of work.

Osteoporosis

Is about the darkness of a disorder and how beautiful that darkness can be, but how do we bring attention to this cause that is so dark and unpalatable.  In My collection I discuss the idea of beautifying a cause to make it palatable.  I hope to draw interest and concern rather than recoil from a disorder that affects so many.
Osteoporosis is a textile collection using stitch, natural fiber fabric, heat press printing.

Structure of the Ear

Is about the Pin Point Introspective.  Looking back and into inner self, with the way my work is presented tends to visual but I wanted to explore my other strong sense; my pleasure in listen I need to listen to my inner self and surrounding.
Structure of the Ear is a screen/lino printed series printed on watercolour paper with line produced with pencil then scanned and distorted.

All art work was created by Elizabeth Oniri, the screen printed image where photocopied from a medical book and the spliced images are from detailed drawings from a medical book about osteoporosis.
